Sturqen - Peste EP

Sturqen are César Rodrigues and David Arantes, a duo from Portugal (Porto). Their music explores a vast amount of sonic rhythmics where a techno-trance universe is combined with a constant noise attitude. "Peste (plague in english) is a six tracks EP with more distorted beats, sharp killing micro «melodies», and heavy raw energy of minimal noise aesthetics. Great leap forward and continuation in their music's thin line and a next step before new full length". Released in Kvitnu . Order it in Kvitnu, Bandcamp or Juno Digital. If you are seduced by artists like Byetone, Ryoji Ikeda, NHK, this EP will do something special for you. Recommended! [Para Ouvir/Samples]

Hercules and Love Affair – Blue Songs: album stream

"It's been three years since Andy Butler joined forces with Antony Hegarty for Hercules and Love Affair's debut single Blind, the best slice of melancholy disco since pretty much anything Vince Clarke turned his hand to. Skip forward to 2011 and the New York band are back with their second album, Blue Songs, but this time with a few new recruits. Butler's still at the helm, but fan-turned-frontman Shaun Wright and Venezuelan singer Aerea Negrot now lead the vocals on standout tracks such as My House and Painted Eyes. And while Hegarty is missing, H&LA stalwart Kim Ann Foxman remains. " in guardian [Read More]

FACT mix 216: Hype Williams

"Their FACT mix is an epic, intrepid survey of the Hype Williams universe, touching on the billowing AM pop of Steely Dan and Fleetwood Mac, rough-hewn garage and grime from So Solid Crew and Ruff Sqwad, black metal abstraction from Burzum, sun-dried dub from Augustus Pablo, urgent art-rock from Beat Happening and The Fall, gallows humour from Lenny Bruce and Chris Morris, paper-thin synth-pop from Bardeux, slick hip-hop from Jaheim. What’s more, you get two previously unreleased Hype Williams tracks, ‘Farthing Wood Dub’ and ‘Businessline’, in the bargain." [Read More] Tracklist on comments.

Cezary Gapik – Contrast I

[White Box Recordings - WHITEBOX008] (2011) **Strictly Limited to 400 copies, first 100 on red vinyl** White Box showcase two sides of Cezary Gapik's character with an alternately terrifying and reflective slab of blood red wax. Active in the Polish underground for over two decades, Cezary's work incorporates the fundamentals of avant-garde music by Stockhausen, Feldman, Ferrari et al with computer processing and collaborations with artists such as Scorn, creating music based on drones and micro-tonal sound interlaced with field recordings and glitch edits. His two compositions here are clearly defined by their evocative titles. Entering the vast subduction zone of 'Tremor' we find a wall of subbass forced beneath layers of excoriating noise, the resultant friction creating masses of kinetic energy released as pure, blistered noise before cooling to a spongy mass of molten granite drones resonating over an endless plain. If that side was the genesis, 'Drowsiness' could be a time-lapsed sonic image of billions of years of ecosystem evolution, a calm, steadily blooming mass of harmonic forestation sprawling across the tract of newly created land, all at once blissfully serene, but with an underlying meditative and psychedelic agenda. We cant wait for the next two instalments - highly recommended. in boomkat [Order Here] Features cover art by Berlin based painter Suse Kipp.

Enemy Earth - Bardo

Eat Concrete bring us the second long play by Enemy Earth featuring Recor, Avrey Muela, Anthony Giarrusso, Alex Maloney & Jar Moff. ‘Bardo’ it’s a kind of musical expression I didn’t expect to hear since Alice Coltrane spiritual transition. It channel’s an exquisite example of good music, blowing and breathing vivid rivers of sound through the piano and guitar sound layers, brilliantly combined with lo-fi sampling. The end result is a dark blend of wide-ranging influences travelling from'70's psych-rock, avant-garde jazz, ambient and down tempo. If you are fascinated by cinematic Buddhist chants and drums, tune on ‘Bardo’. Highly recommended! Artwork by Jar Moff & Recor. Full Album Out Jan 2011 (vinyl & digital).

Dromos 005 - Niagara EP

CD-R comes in a limited edition of 100 copies. Artwork & packaging by Natalie Westbrook.

Yoga - Encante

Music by Yoga from the Megafauna Album on Holy Mountain Records. Video by Kevin DiTrapano "Understand this: Yoga dispenses a sinister frailty of howling swellsin hissing static that combusts into crawling shock heaps, to the effect of Mayhem performing Twin Peaks incidentals in a prairie recordedby The KLF. A brief description casts them as black metal's answer to Throbbing Gristle. The texture-based rendering of their compositionssails them on a strange sea between song and sound effect as itbobs along the waves like a dead man s bottled message. Aspects ofGoblin rehearsals in dead hills is interrupted as Monster Zero carvesmountain sides with lightning breath. Oscillating leads pummel intochurning riffs as if Caledonia was performed in an echo chamber near Lodi, New Jersey. The extrinsic properties of this work may resultin disambiguation." - holy mountain

Scott Bartlett - OffOn (1972)

In 1972, Scott Bartlett played with (new) video technology and then filmed it. The resulting piece, OffOn, is a film of psychedelic colorized rephotographed video loops. In 2004, the film was selected for preservation under the Library of Congress National Film Registry. “OFFON is so striking a work, so obviously a landmark, that it has been acquired by virtually every major film art collection in America, from the Museum of Modern Art to the Smithsonian Institute.” – Sheldon Renan, Curator, Pacific Film Archive. Unfortunatley, YouTube’s low-quality compression destroys much of the brilliance of the film. A nice DVD version can be found on “Treasures From American Film Archives Encore Edition“. via kwur

Pre-revolutionary experiments on acid jak (mixtape)

Best music of 2010

2010 and the first decade of the XXI century are gone. There was footwork, juke, witch house, drag and darkwave. It is unlikely that any of these genres will be as influential as 2step and dubstep which emerged in the early 00s.
Dubstep legends Digital Mystikz released two albums in 2010 and they did it in a Speakerboxxx/The Love Below fashion - Mala is responsible for "Return II Space" and Coki is behind "Urban Ethics", both make a pleasant listening experience even if they sound like nothing happened between 2005 and 2009. But not everyone was as orthodox as Mala and Coki. Dubstep continued to move in 2010 and has come closer than ever to pop music. "Katy on a Mission" and Magnetic Men were on the charts. This left people wondering if dubstep was dead. It probably is, but that does not seem to be a bad thing given the amount of interesting music growing from its ashes. Guido, Mount Kimbie, Darkstar, James Blake and Fantastic Mr Fox released pleasing music with a high level of pop sensibility. By now, their music is connected to dubstep only remotely. Bass music in general was fertile ground, funky delivered through names like Cooly G, Joe, Girl Unit and there was plenty of psychedelic almost unclassifiable stuff like Rustie, 8bitch and Ikonika, all owing to rave, dubstep and idm in equal amounts.
High expectations were laid on the return of To Rococo Rot and Autechre. The German group recorded "Speculation" in Faust´s studio and got remixed by Shackleton. The British duo released "Oversteps" and "Move of Ten", the former being one of the best albums of the year, while the later is still growing on us. Two provinces of the IMF Republic supplied the world with interesting offers. Solar Bears (IE) and Gala Drop (PT) both owe not to the creditors in the financial market but to prog and kraut-rock, which anyway are also mostly German. Highlights in guitar based noise included Pete Swanson and the Yellow Swans. There was a weird, claustrophobic and very minimal release by Denseland and drone music became highly psychedelic (see High Wolf), whereas psychedelia turned to dub (Sun Araw) and hindi mysticism (Prince Rama). For a trippy vibe see also Brainfeeder, Flying Lotus et co.
Madlib released one installment of his "Medicine Show" per month and still had time to produce Guilty Simpson and Strong Arm Steady. 2010 seems to have also been the year of geeky people named "James" (see Ferraro and Pants). Along with Ferraro, LA Vampires, Hype Williams and Rangers are worth mentioning in the hypnagogic pop field. Retailers should be prepared for an increase on their scented candles sales if Dolphins Into The Future continue to expand their reach in 2011.
All this kept us entertained, renewed our interest in the left side of popular music and satisfied our addiction to new sound. But if our brain was a hard drive and if we had to delete stuff to make free space available for 2011, three names would be worth keeping in our memory: Daniel Lopatin, Actress and Demdike Stare. They were the creators of the best music of the year! Now, welcome to 2011. text by Filipe Oliveira

CONSOLE - Herself

CONSOLE - Herself (Disko B Germany) Comentários: The Notwist's Martin Gretschmann and vocalist Miriam Osterrieder reprise their Console project with a new album of sweetened electronic pop. Mellow and emotive strains of electro-pop, ambient electronica and even Krautrock-y tropes within a dancefloor context. Do check this if the wave revival thing feels a little outmoded but you're after the same thing with a modern touch. [Para Ouvir/Samples]
