Gareth Pugh Spring/Summer 2012

Strong, striking and structured Gareth Pugh’s spring collection demanded your attention from the very first look. With a bombastic pre-show film starring Crystal Renn setting the mood, Pugh created an atmosphere of pure drama. Just when you thought things couldn’t get any wilder they did and with each successive piece he upped the ante. Criss-crossing cubes of transparent netting adorned the first few dresses, garnering gasps from the audience, while the Phillip Treacy masks of the finale had Paris’ most jaded fashionistas clapping. Intense graphics were the collections dominant motif: stripes and armour-like adornments added interest to the ensembles, particularly those perilous wedges destined for editorial greatness. Pugh has always been able to move his audience, but this season’s blend of theatricality and craftsmanship ranks among spring’s finest. via

Barry Reigate's Equation Exhibit 9 Sept-8 Oct at Paradise Row, London

BARRY REIGATE - Born 1971, London , Lives and works in London . Barry Reigate's Equation Solo Show at Paradise Row, 9 Sept - 8 Oct. At the core of this new body of work is a series of geometric forms, appropriated from a number of mathematics exams and recontextualized as pseudo-Modernist icons. The forms find themselves iterated through various media, in minimal works on paper, as a number of floor-based concrete sculptures and as elements in a sequence of paintings that serve to ornament an evacuated form of Pop-art expressionism. By virtue of their translation from an academic to a cultural context, the forms are revealed as ciphers onto which different, but not dissimilar sets of utopian and aspirational assumptions are projected. So it is that the works, in both formal and material terms, playfully tease the links between social and physical structures, education and labour, culture and play. via dazeddigital

Rad Hourani Spring/Summer 2012

Over the past few seasons, Rad Hourani’s aesthetic has become familiar to fans of minimalist edginess. If you’re looking for an outfit that is tough, androgynous and a slightly subversive, Rad is your go-to-guy. His ready to wear line Rad by Rad may have expanded his reach into a lower price point, but the mood is still the same. Spring adds an unexpected infusion of color via an exploration of blue, from sky to navy the hue flows throughout pieces. Added color aside, don’t expect to see head to toe pastels crop up on Rad’s runway anytime soon. This is a designer who knows his look and sticks to it and his commitment to consistency is what keeps fans coming back for more. via

Brian Eno - Panic Of Looking EP (Warp)

Brian Eno and the words of Rick Holland - panic of looking by Warp Records
From the recordings that produced Drums Between the Bells - the collaboration between Brian Eno and Rick Holland – comes an all new EP titled Panic Of Looking. The 6 tracks continue the exploration of how lyric & song-writing are perceived in the post-everything era. As the Sunday Times Culture suggests, "The poems aren't sung, yet the pieces are undeniably songlike, first because the music refuses to act simply as background, but lurches frequently, sometimes unexpected to the fore, and second because we hear the meaning of the words in the way we normally pick up song lyrics," while WIRED Magazine calls Eno’s soundscapes, "a tapestry of pillowy synths, minor-key melodies, chiming guitars and skittering drums."
All of these elements come together for the November 7th/8th release of the EP, which was produced by Eno and features his original artwork on vinyl, CD & digital formats.

EKOPLEKZ - Intrusive Incidentalz Vol 1 (Punch Drunk)

EKOPLEKZ - Intrusive Incidentalz Vol 1 (Punch Drunk) Comentários: *Available as a 12″ vinyl LP or digital download. If you pre-order the vinyl direct from Punch Drunk’s shop, you will get a free digital copy included. * Following releases earlier this year on Mordant Music and Further Records, Ekoplekz returns with this intriguing release on Peverelist's Punch Drunk. Taking its cues more from 70s library music and the early radiophonic experimentation of Delia Derbyshire than it does from Bristol's bass scene, this collection of claustrophobic terrors nevertheless displays an undisputed debt to the sounds of contemporary dubstep, particularly on "Soviet Drum Brain Attack", where mangled samples are held together with a tolling bass. For the most part the mood is distinctly avant-garde, with highlights including "Rogue Circuits", which can only be described as the sound of a seasick dial-up modem shifting through a number of increasingly darkening moods, and "Devil Mixture" which is reminiscent of the sound of fearful analogue synthesisers trapped in a gathering storm. But it's final track "Maelstrom" where the influence of dance music is most obvious, as metallic tones brush against skittering snares in a track that isn't unlike a more pastoral approximation of Aphex Twin. Tropics - Parodia Flare (Planet Mu)

Tropics - Parodia Flare (Planet Mu) Comentários: Tropics is the sultry electronic shoegaze project of young British producer and multi-instrumentalist Chris Ward. Unlike so many similarly oriented artists, Ward doesn't hide behind distortion - his arrangements are complex and crystal-clear, reminding us less of any nu-gaze outfit and far more of the gushing electronic fantasias peddled by Nathan Fake, early Four Tet and Tropics' Mu labelmates Solar Bears. We can't help but compare a good number of the album's tracks to the US chillwave of Washed Out and Toro Y Moi, but the most satisfying tracks are those that go for the levitating electronic rock sublime, like the title number and the epic 'Moauves', being the kind of extravagantly psychedelic fare that The Horrors wish they could make. It’s certainly a diverse album - 'Celebrate' summons the Valium-smashed beatscapes of Balam Acab, 'Telassar' is boogie gone Balearic - and Ward deploys an incredible range of rhythmic and instrumental ideas to flesh out his disarmingly pretty songs, but he manages to keep everything coherent. A highly impressive debut all in all. in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]

James Ferraro - Condo Pets EP (Hippos In Thanks)

James Ferraro is a”critically acclaimed artist of the 21st Century POP ART wave”. Is new digital only material named "Condo Pets EP" preludes his forthcoming LP 'Far Side Virtual' through Hippos In Tanks on October 25th, in which, Ferraro explains, “The results of this relationship will see a new era in Art History.”
James now goes minimalistic or post-impressionist if you prefer. His ambitious 80’s nostalgia took him now closer to Japan, it haves that psyche sophistication of Haroumi Hosono and a thin glow of YMO (Yellow Magic Orchestra), an excellent challenge to achieve that so called “Newness” in music. Condo Pets will nourish perfectly the famished 21st century I-pod consumers with his pleasant-sounding work. TIP!

Mugler Men’s Buckled & Laced Creepers

The Mugler Men’s Buckled & Laced Creepers for autumn/winter ’11, seen here in black.
For their first collection at the helm of Mugler, Nicola Formichetti and Romain Kremer have enlisted the renowned British shoe manufacturer Underground to add their rock-and-roll, punk-inspired footwear, which perfectly complements the strong lines and dark minimalism of the collection’s apparel.
The shoe’s premium all-leather upper is clean and sharp in appearance, welted on a traditional creeper wedged crepe-sole. A classic shape that has been produced by Underground since the style was adopted by the 1980s punk movement, this shoe adds to Mugler’s edgy collection with its own iconic rock-and-roll aesthetic.

MYKITA x Bernhard Willhelm Jacques Yves Sunglasses

The MYKITA x Bernhard Willhelm Jacques Yves Sunglasses, seen here in black (available in grey and pink).
Continuing the ever-popular and innovative collaboration between MYKITA and Bernhard Willhelm, this pair of oversized sunglasses features a rounded bloated frame in matte black, inspired by the art of Erwin Wurm. The shape and style of diving masks was also incorporated in the design, which is finish with polarised mirror lenses.
Hand-assembled in the MYKITA factory in Berlin, this pair of sunglasses are fitted with plastic lenses that block all harmful wavelengths of light below 380nm (UVA and UVB). Toughness is added by break-resistant coating on the inside on the lens, plus they are polarized for anti-glare.
Finally, the arms of the sunglasses are also made from a thermoplastic, meaning heat causes them to slightly change shape and mould to your face, for a better fit. The sunglasses come with a large, velvet-covered case.

Nickolas Mohanna - Reflectors

Nickolas Mohanna - Reflectors (Preservation) Comentários: Part of the Circa series (limited editions of 300 copies) is the second album from Nikolas Mohanna under his birth name after years of recording as Vakhchav. 'Reflectors' draws upon the rich sensory experience of living in the complex sprawl of New York, and his time studying with noted improvisor and sampling maverick Bob Ostertag, to create dense, dynamic and detailed electronic environments with a certain sense of sci-fi wonder. We can hear this in the quality of shifting layers in 'Neon Agents', which disperse and diffuse as through we're hovering through a misty alley in the sub-levels of a futurist metropolis, or when we're reminded of John Carpenter in the bubbling arpeggios of 'Color Theory' and the inquisitive melodies of 'Mott Street'. These are vivid sound designs, or even tone poems for the future, combining a subtly lyrical melodic touch with the kind of immersive spatial auras which simply make you forget you're listening, suspending disbelief and placing you in the centre of some abstract yet tangibly evocative experience. The mastering job from James Plotkin no doubt lends a very effervescent finish. Recommended! in boomkat

Strategy - Super Awareness Is Fruit (Under The Spire)

Strategy - Super Awareness Is Fruit (Under The Spire) Comentários: *Limited edition of 200 copies on clear vinyl. One 20-minute, deeply layered and psyched-out dub track from Paul Dickow's Strategy project split over two sides* Super Awareness Is Fruit comes as a welcome expansion of the multilayered ambiences that made up Dickow's Music For Lamping long-player, tackling the contemporary drone-scape with an agenda that eschews minimalist convention in favour of a sparkling, densely populated narrative full of dissolved acoustic timbres, wah-wah filtering treatments and big, warm bass depth charges. Genre buzzwords like 'kosmische' waft indelibly into the consciousness, but there's little that's retro about Strategy's sound - these beatless, watery vistas are psychedelic in a very 21st century sense of the word, bringing humanised, jam-band dynamics to a pristine electronic idiom. in boomkat

A Winged Vctory For The Sullen - A Winged Victory for the Sullen

A Winged Vctory For The Sullen - A Winged Victory for the Sullen (Erased Tapes) Comentários: We were always going to dig a band called 'A Winged Victory For The Sullen', but we're pleased to find that their music's actually very special too. It's a collaboration between composer Dustin O'Halloran and Stars Of The Lid's Adam Wiltzie, bolstered by contributions from Hildur Gudnadottir and Peter Broderick, and if you're familiar of the past work of all these sizeable talents then you'll have an idea of what to expect from the album: richly emotive chamber music with a supremely advanced grasp of space and atmosphere. 'We Played Some Open Chords' is the arresting opener, piano and string reverberations melting together imperceptibly before your very ears; 'Requiem For The Static King' is a fittingly beautiful elegy for the late Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse, and sure enough it seems to tremble with its own terrible sense of loss. We can't think of many albums of recent times that have so skilfully balanced droning minimalism with open, expressive melody; the results are completely bewitching, swelling to a near-symphonic climax in 'Steep Hills Of Vicodin Tears'. This is a grief-stricken album, make no mistake, but the sheer artistry at work makes it a resoundingly uplifting listen. in boomkat

Rafael Anton Irisarri - Reverie '2nd Edition' (Immune)

Rafael Anton Irisarri - Reverie '2nd Edition' (Immune)Comentários: *Second pressing on black vinyl, limited to just 450 copies for the world, features a sublime recording of Arvo Part's "Fur Alina" and also comes with a coupon to download an MP3 version direct from the label* Arriving around the same time as his greatly anticipated return as The Sight Below, this new LP from Rafael Anton Irisarri shows a different side to this talented composer/producer. Reverie pairs two brand new compositions with an interpretation of Arvo Pärt's classic 'Für Alina', arriving in an edition of 450 copies pressed onto black virgin vinyl, complete with download code. The A-side begins with 'Lit A Dawn', a typically dense and immersive composition that integrates pensive, tentatively paced piano figures with arcs of vaporous background ambience. The compressed and muffled quality of the recording only heightens the impact of the music itself: as slow and purposeful as it may be, it somehow also feels as if its on the verge of rupturing or breaking at the seams. After this lyrical opening, 'Embraced' takes on a more mysterious quality, sliding what seems to be submerged guitar figures across Eastern-style scales while a soupy, filtered production style lends an aloof, washed-out feeling. Taking up the entirety of the B-side, the extended 'Für Alina' is rendered with a reverent beauty, observing the meditative economy of Pärt's triadic 'tintinnabulation' style. Here the bell-like sonorities prompted by sustaining overtones is as important to the central harmonies themselves, and Irisarri certainly exhibits an understanding of this kind of detailed approach to minimalism. The piece is supremely graceful, dictated by a free flowing tempo and a mood of poised introspection. It fits Irisarri's own style of composition and performance perfectly, and he makes for an apt interpreter. Strictly limited copies only! in boomkat [Para Ouvir/Samples]
