OMID WALIZADEH - Modern Persian Speech Sounds

OMID WALIZADEH - Modern Persian Speech Sounds (B ta'arof US)
The overall effect is haunting and richly textured, with strings and woodwind instruments layered over beats that thump and skitter, wobbly dubstep basslines and rhythmically repeated snippets of Farsi speech. Even in the digital recording, the crackle of an old vinyl recording can be heard in some of the pauses. “Just to be able to play with all this Persian material was so exciting,” Walizadeh says. “I’ve been trying to make them mesh for so long.”via thenational

MACE. - The Heavens Are Already Theirs

MACE - The Heavens Are Already Theirs (Eclipse Music Italy)  Mace. continues its path of sound experimentation to dark and throbbing scenarios with this first EP entitled "The Heavens Are Already Theirs". After the electro cinematic "The Metamorphosis Through Dreams" (Further Records 2013) and the experimental/dark statement "The Wealth Of Nations" (Eclipse Music 2013) "The Heavens Are Already Theirs" looks like a set of tracks chronologically different from each other. The mixture of the elements combines the slow-tempo gloomy rhythms of tracks such as "Alcol" and "La Stasi" with the anxyolitic mood from the B sides tracks "Ballad" and "Il Vecchio Della Montagna". The cover artwork becomes itself the emblem of the EP. However, into this uniform dense substrate the tracks find their common denominator of emotional impact. Even the title "The Heavens Are Already Theirs" is a reference of lacerated sound of the songs in perfect balance between anxiety and darkness. Good stuff ! Benjamin Millepied takes Forest Swords' dark beats to the Dead Sea

Forest Swords: The Weight of Gold on

Forest Swords: The Weight of Gold

Benjamin Millepied Fills a Bright Dead Sea Landscape with the Experimental Artist’s Brooding Music
“I first saw Billy Barry perform at Juilliard four years ago,” says the acclaimed French choreographer, filmmaker and photographer Benjamin Millepied. “I thought, ‘Who is this creature?’ Billy’s quality as a dancer is so otherworldly, I immediately knew I wanted to create a portrait of him. The sense of solitude depicted in the film reflects just how different he is as an artist.” The chance to direct today’s music video for British artist Forest Swords’ haunting track “The Weight of Gold” presented an intriguing opportunity for Millepied, who was seduced after being inspired by... read more here. via nowness

Amanda Harlech and Jerry Stafford Channel the Dark Romanticism of Paris For A Magazine. “There was a very special chemistry between the Tilda and Saskia that turned into something very close to theater-play,” says photographer Vincent van de Wijngaard of shooting Serpentine, a series of noir-ish images of the actress and model for our exclusive reveal of the forthcoming issue of A Magazine Curated By Iris van Herpen. “I used a lot of locations in around Pigalle that were connected to the symbolist poets.” Art directed and styled by seasoned Creative Director Jerry Stafford, the issue’s curator Iris van Herpen, and fashion authority Amanda Harlech, read more... via Nowness

Russell Haswell - 37 Minute Workout

Russell Haswell - 37 Minute Workout (Diagonal) Comentários: Russell Haswell puts a donk on it for Diagonal in a compelling, combustible and personalised '37 Minute Workout' of fractured noise and techno deconstructions. Working under a title nodding to both the album's physicality and riffing on Paul Morley's idea that the perfect album length is 37 minutes long, it's a typically uncompromising session cocking a contrary view of the dancefloor. Rhythmically, it's by far the most "structured" album in Haswell's solo catalogue, consolidating the freeform, improvised approach and brutalist, visceral timbres of previous releases with an appreciation of rhythmic affect stemming from his formative daze split between Carcass shows and early raves at The Eclipse in Coventry, and the proceeding two decades of playing and collaborating with the likes of AFX, Autechre, and Florian Hecker. In a sense, it's more Jeff Keen than Jeff Mills - more blatz than bang - but on the right 'floor cuts like the opening junglist assault 'Spring Break Extended' and the scuttled electro of 'Unknown Known' just nail it. The album's at its best when it's even more obtuse and explorative, as with the slyly arrhythmic 'Chaos Clapping' and its reprise; in the bloodied spatter of 'Scratchy' and 'Scratchy Dub'; and two surprisingly touching highlights in the tortured wrench of his Coil tribute, 'Elph', and the haunting spectral convolutions of closer 'Convalescence'. In short: it's an obtuse dance pop album made by one of the most uncompromising and unique British artists of the last 20 years, here delivering one of his most intriguing and ultimately satisfying transmissions to date. in boomkat

Jamal Moss (Hieroglyphic Being) - Acid Symphonic Op.01

Jamal Moss (Hieroglyphic Being) - Acid Symphonic Op.01 Comentários: Reel Torque's tertiary tape captures Windy City sorcerer Jamal Moss (Hieroglyphic Being, The Sun God) putting Teenage Engineering's Op.01 synthesiser thru its paces in an hypnotic hour long improvisation. Whilst Jamal's best known for jamming on vintage kit in classic Chicago style, the 'Acid Symphonic Op.01 Concert' is testament to an intuitive approach and fluidly psychedelic vision that can be practically applied to any bit of kit, proving the old adage; it's not what you use but how you use it that really matters. For 62 minutes he extrudes a sequence of driving acid bass, escalating arpeggios and gorgeous, sky high pads from the little white box, showcasing its canny tape recorder-simulation and LFO functions with typical discipline and guile to third eye-rolling effect. When it really gets going you know that this could only be the work of one man, and there's scant few artists in the world we could genuinely say that about, so it's all the more gratifying when he pops up on the mic at the end... in boomkat

Hood by Air Fall 2014

Afterhours - Lowlife

Afterhours - Lowlife (Not Not Fun) Comentários: Eclectic selection running from midnight jazz moods to swinging house and dusted downbeats. "As much as Los Angeles gleams in the global mind as a gateway to dream fulfillment and televised wealth / fame amalgams, it’s equally a desert of disappointments. Hence the dead-end yoga cults, under-the-bridge tar dealers, valley burnouts, Inland Empire night-stalkers and seas of destitute Eastside lowlifes. This vibe is central to Afterhours’s languid, nocturnal musical vision, which has evolved from sleekly moody, synthesized sleepwalks to an unusually elegant hybridized trip-hop sub-species. Jammed signals sputter under broken, minor key scales; shuffling, crate-digger drum patterns give way to skeletal house rhythms (“Lovesick”), slow washes of shimmering texture (“Outcome”) and sampled, spectral jazz (“Night and Day”). Though crafted with electronic means, most of the material on Lowlife centers around acoustic, physical sounds—reverbed piano, dusty snares, crisp percussive accents, soft-focus saxophone. Fragile conjurings of urban ambience, the poetry and pulse of isolation, Staying Up Late To Make Music To Stay Up Late To—the world of Afterhours spins through the dark, en route to dawn." in boomkat [Stream]

Negra Branca - M.U.Podcast 73# (Feb 2014)

Negra Branca's (Marlene Ribeiro) eponymous solo debut of swirling dub pop for her Gnod bandmates' Tesla Tapes was originally released on cassette last year and was one of the finest to emerge from Manchester in 2013. Perhaps due to its format and limited release it sorta disappeared from view without a great deal of attention - something that this remastered and expanded vinyl edition (released in conjunction with Michael Holland's ONO imprint) might rectify. Produced in Ibiza and Salford, N B is an intriguing, hugely promising debut - highly recommended if you're into Yong Yong, LA Vampires, Hype Williams, FKA Twigs, Paco Sala.
